Making Eyepiece from Old Binocular

I made two eyepieces from the disassembled binocular. You can read about that binocular disassembly in my another blog post. You can extract the eyepieces from your binocular in similar manner.

Quality of the eyepiece depends on the quality of the binocular and brand. Good binocular will have good quality lenses and sometimes you can extract achromatic eyepieces from high end binoculars. The binocular I disassembled have plain eye lenses and had Ramsden type eyepieces.

After cutting the protruding piece of eyepiece housing with a hacksaw and filing the edges round clean with waterproof sandpaper, I attached 1-3/4″ long pieces of 32mm diameter grey PVC tubing for barrels with each eyepiece housing. These PVC barrels are press fit into the eyepiece housing and not glued. PVC plumbing pipe of 32mm OD is easily available with local hardware stores and may cost you 10-15 Rs. per feet.

Also, to prevent any internal light reflection in the barrels, I used vinyl sticker strips of matt black finish inside of each barrel. The vinyl sticker costed me 10/- Rs. square feet.

After completing the entire assembly, 2 quality 1.25″ OD eyepieces are made and ready to be used on any telescope. Both eyepieces focal length is around 28mm based on the objective focal length (200mm) and binocular’s declared magnification (7x).

PS: Red Henry’s Facebook group A Second Look: Reusing Old Lenses for Astronomy is a great source about learning and making the eyepieces from old binoculars and lenses. I highly recommend you join Red’s group to learn more.
